We will leave your lodging in Fes at 8:00 am for our one-day excursion to Chefchaouen. To get to the little village of Chefchaouen, we will travel three hours north in an air-conditioned car. Views of the Rif Mountains and the undulating hills of Ouezzane will captivate you as you go. Take a moment to take in the scenery, cold air, and breathtaking pictures.
Chaouen, as the locals call it, was established as a fortification in the 1400s and is situated close inland from Tangier and Tetouan. Chefchaouen is well known for its wonderful, premium goat cheese, handcrafted wool items, and gorgeous blue-rinsed buildings. The mountain summits above the town, which resemble a goat’s two horns (chaouen), are the source of the town’s name. This hillside village has an abundance of water, which surrounds the mountains with a network of caves rich in minerals.
Take in the expansive perspective of Chefchaouen by stopping at the summit of the mountain. You will get four hours to explore the town’s tiny, meandering streets after arriving at 12:00 PM. Explore Arab-Andalusian customs and goods by going to the medina. See the magnificent Grand Mosque and Kasbah from the fifteenth century in Plaza Uta El-Hammam, the major square. This mosque, which has an odd octagonal tower, was constructed by Jewish and Muslim immigrants who fled to Chefchaouen in order to avoid Spanish persecution. Discover the history and culture of this region by visiting the Kasbah Museum or the Ethnographic Museum, which has pictures of the old town, musical instruments, and antique weapons.
Get some fresh air, enjoy the sound of the water, and take in the verdant hills by visiting the well-known Ras El-Maa Waterfall. Walking up the hill to the Spanish Mosque will provide you with a lovely view of the city. Savor a delicious lunch in the square or at a rooftop eatery while taking in some people-watching. Sitting in the riverbed for lunch on a hot day will help you cool off.
